Tim Cook says Apple TV is still ‘a hobby,’ can’t live without it

Looking forward to an update to your beloved Apple TV? It seems the company still fancies the device as well. On the quarterly numbers call today, Tim Cook quipped that “we still classify this as a hobby, but we continue to add things to it.” He went on to say that the company will “continue to pull strings and see where we can take it.” This comes on the heels of Cupertino seeing a record 1.4 million units sold last quarter.

Look! It’s a Sailboat—Wait, No, It’s 4:15 [Video]

You know what I hate? Glancing at my watch and actually reading the correct time. Thankfully, Kisai’s new watch forces me to read it like I would a 1990′s optical illusion poster. More »

Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

windows 8 app store

Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft’s wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today’s installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We’ve got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed — and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We’re also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio — the game’s actual publisher.

It’s still early, of course, so it’s entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple’s legal eagles at bay.

Dutch court rejects Apple appeal, says Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is legal

A court in the Hague has just cleared the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for sale in the Netherlands, rejecting Apple’s requests for a nationwide ban. As NU.nl reports, a different Dutch court had already issued a similar ruling in October, which Cupertino promptly appealed, claiming that Sammy’s slate was too similar to its own iPad 2. Today, though, the Court of the Hague shot down Apple’s arguments, determining that there are enough differences between the two products to legally justify their coexistence. Granted, this is only one of many patent battles that the two companies are currently waging, but for today, at least, it looks like Samsung has come out on top.

[Thanks, Rolfski]

Tweaking Its Identity Stance, Google+ Now Allows Nicknames

In the initial Google+ sign-up process, questionable profile names were flagged by Google’s algorithmic recognition system, and users were prompted to try again. The same system will still recognize alternate names, but will begin to allow specific exceptions like nicknames, maiden names and names with alternative spelling.

Canadian researchers aim to build a more life-like robot, one piece at a time

It may not be all that human-like in its current state, but a team of researchers at the University of Ottawa are promising that this robot will get there sooner or later. Dubbed “Pumpkin,” the bot will apparently have its parts replaced piece-by-piece with more life-like counterparts over time, including parts that make use of a new artificial skin the researchers have developed. It not only includes the usual array of sensors that give the robot some degree of tactile sensitivity, but a network of tubes that circulate hot water to actually increase the temperature of the skin. According to the researchers, the eventual goal is to have a robot that appears and behaves naturally enough to make humans feel at ease when they’re interacting with it, but it might get a bit worse before it gets better — the next step is to replace the head with an anatomically correct model of the human skull, which will have the aforementioned artificial skin stretched over it.

[Thanks, Jeff]
